Get this...back home, Brook Trout are called "Mud Trout"! And they look like these fine examples of Salvelinus fontinalis all year round. Amazing how someone could give these fish such un assuming and un-flattering names.
Parr markings indicate juvenile fish, particularly salmonids, although I've been told some adult fish can carry parr markings on into their adult lives.
Parr markings are the "thumb print" looking marks down the sides of the juvenile fish.
You can easily see them on this small wild rainbow trout:
