missouri and kansas residents

My buddy is giving me an old jon boat. I think its 12ft. He bought it years ago from a guy in kansas with no title. I live in missouri and plan on putting a motor on it. Do I need a title to register it or will a bill of sale work? Any help greatly appreciated. I need to get into those good bass spots at smithville lake
