New threads will always be posted asking what are the best flies for a beginner to learn. I would suggest that the question be rephrased to ask what are the most important tying techniques to be mastered. I've used this idea for years in classes and it seems to be easier for all. While subject to variations in where, when and your target species consider a priority list something like this.
1. The pinch wrap.
2. Hair and feather wings including feather matching and hair stacking.
3 Tinsel and floss wrapped bodies.
4. Touch and loop dubbing
5 Hackle wrapping: dry,wet (collar and beard) plus Palmer style. Parachutes later.
6. Multi material bodies e.g.nymphs and stoneflies.
7. Spinning deer hair.
A list like this can be edited as you wish but the idea is to show that an accumulation of different techniques and not a list of flies is your goal.
If a newbie really wants to know which flies are most productive for him he should provide the when, where and for what information first.
