I work in the fiberglass...
industy. I am a chemist that makes gel coat and fiberglass resins for boatbuilding. The best thing you can use is a 50/50 blend of hydrophobic fumed silica / hydrophilic precipated silica. The hydrophilic (water loving) will absorb the water already on the fly and the hydrophpobic (water repelling) will coat it to float well. It also works great on nymphs. It holds air bubbles on the fly making it look very realistic. Use a wide mouth bottle and drop the fly into the bottle while its still attached to tippet, cover with your hand and shake..comes out ready to go!!
And yes- I cannot imagine the job of putting this stuff in frogs fanny bottles, must be expensive and time consuming. We used this stuff in 20# & 350# bulk bags (needless to say, I have a lifetime supply)
