Sport fishing column for June 15 to 22, 2009

This week we return to our on going series covering the history of sport fishing in BC.

1998 saw five books released covering our sport fishery: "Rivers on My Mind," by Van Gorman Egan. "Irresistible Waters," by Arthur James Lingren. "Rod, Reel, and Reminiscence," by John Massey. "West Coast Fly Fisher," which was a collection of articles by Brian Chan, Art Lingren, Barry Thornton, Harry Penner, and Kelly Davidson, compiled by Mark Pendlington.

Unique to 1998 was a three page stamp collection of flies created by BC fly fishing legends Roderick Haig-Brown and Tommy Brayshaw.

1990 saw BC's famous fly fishery on televisions across the country in, "Casting Shadows," produced by Michael Sagadore of Avalon Communications for the Knowledge Network. This six part master piece chronicled the history and sport of fly fishing across our province.

Events

Next weekend is the BC Family Fishing Weekend, and no licenses are required to fish any of our non-tidal waters for the whole weekend. Check out www.bcfamilyfishing.com for more details.

Also don't forget about the Outdoor Lifestyles Show; coming to the Golden Ears Winter Club in Maple Ridge BC, on June 27 & 28.

The Report

Fishing on our lower mainland lakes is good. Mornings and evenings the ticket to success now that summer is here. For dry (floating) try: Lady McConnel, Griffith Gnat, Black Gnat, Black Ant, Royal Coachman, Double Hackled Peacock, Adams, Tom Thumb, Big Ugly, Elk Hair Caddis, or Irresistible.

The kokanee fishing is still first rate. For these tasty landlocked sockeye try: Red Abbis, Red Spratley, red Tom Thumb, red Leach, pink Leach, Happy Hooker, Cathy's Coat, of Pink Eve.

The local bass and panfish are happy too. For these kid friendly summer fish try: Clouser's Deep Minnow, Crayfish, Poppers, Big Black, Stimulator, Bucktail, Rolled Muddler, Dolly Whacker, Tied down Minnow, or Tom Thumb.

The fishing on all of our interior lakes is good.
