The best rods for roll casting are going to be the long rods...the longer the better. There are some being built these days in 10 and 11 ft lengths in both single hand and two handed "switch" rods. ...nd like RS2 said, spey casting techniques will really get you out there.

... as was the late, great Tom White. He was a great caster and teacher, and his rollcasting was just incredible. I highly recommend his videos if you can track them down. He has one entire video devoted to the rollcast. On another tape, there is a short (but excellent) section on the rollcast.
I LOVE flyfishing! It is a game with few rules!

This is an important purchase for a "poor guy".
Am I missing anything among your suggestions?
Everybody has got a personal preference and usually you can find one for everything out there. There have been suggestions here that I would agree with and suggestions that I would disagree with.
If you can for a "Poor guy" try and get together with others and share lines and rods and see what you like. It is really the only way to find what you will like.
There is nothing worse than spending a lot of cash on something that was recommended and you find out you hate it because it doesn't fit your needs.
