The bamboo itself isn't actually all that expensive- with shipping, it costs about $30/culm. The cost of a well crafted bamboo fly rod comes mostly from the time and skill required to make them. And of course, there's all the other materials that go into the rod (wood and nickel silver for the reel seat, guides, silk, varnish, cork, glue, aluminum and brass for the rod tube, etc..). All told, even the most well established rodmakers that sell their rods for upwards of $2000 only make about $15/hour.
