I'm going to San Diego for a couple of days next month to do the tourist thing.
Any recommendations for fishing in the area?
My wifes whole family is going and I can't wait until my brother inlaw see's me pull my 4 Pc. rod out of my suitcase. He'll probably wet himself great paybacks for outfishing me on the last steelhead trip.
We all know the area code for heaven is 406

Most of the San Diego area beaches can be productive for surf perch,
halibut, and other species. Some of the more popular areas for
flyfishing the surf are Coronado, Mission Beach, Torrey Pines, and Del
Mar. If you are not familiar with the tackle and techniques used for
our surfzone you can check out www.fliflicker.com[/url:0689d] for some basics.

San Diego Bay and Mission Bay can also be productive for many species. Skiffs may be rented from Seaforth Boat Rentals ( www.seaforthboatrental.com[/url:0689d] ) at their Mission Bay and Glorietta Bay
(off of SD Bay) locations.

If you are interested in a guided trip in the surf or on the bay check
with Andy Montana's ( www.andymontanas.com[/url:0689d] ) or San Diego Fly Shop
(which is in Solana Beach www.sandiegoflyshop.com[/url:0689d] ).

There are many nearby lakes which are open on various schedules. Most
are stocked with trout and also have bass and panfish. For current
information on lake schedules go to www.sdfish.com[/url:0689d] where you will find
links to information on lakes as well has some message boards where
current information on all types of fishing may be gleaned.

Let me know if you have any addition questions

The most recent issue of "Southwest Fly Fishing"..Winter 2006...has an article by Jeff Solis...."San Diego Beaches. CA".

Looks like Craig covered your request very very well.

Man, wish I had that information when we went last year. I didn't bring my fishing gear.

Funny story, when we were playing in the surf at Ocean Beach, I felt something fairly heavy smack me in the back of the head. It ended up being a Bonito which continued jumping as it was making it's way into deeper water. At Mission Beach, we also saw a lot of stingrays and sharks (bottom feeding kind) and a seal came within fifteen feet of us. We were hitting the beaches fairly early in the morning to catch the incoming tide (bigger waves, you know).

I was stationed at the Coast Guard air base on Harbor Dr a loooooooooong time ago. We use to fish right off the boat dock in the bay...caught fish too.

Hey gonfishn,

Make sure when you go don't forget to take with you the most important piece of equipment besides all the normal stuff, this piece of absolutely necessary equipment is, a STRIPPING BASKET of some kind!!!!!

It will make your fishing experience in the surf alot more enjoyable by a ton, trust me!!!
