i've been invited on a float fishing trip for smallmouth in virginia late june/early july. i know more about quantum physics than i know about smallmouth fishing anywhere, especially virginia. (can you get there from mississippi) the trip is more than i can afford and i don't want to go if that is a bad time or not a good place (don't know where, southern part i'm sure) anybody got and advice?

I have fished smallmouth bass in VA on the New River and also on the Roanoke. If you have a chance to fish the New River go for it for sure! Smallmouth bass are great fun to catch!

The time of year should be very good.

Can you tell us what water you will be fishing?

When you can arrange your affairs to go fishing, forget all the signs, homilies, advice and folklore. JUST GO.

Once upon a time the big decision was either to drive 20 minutes to the Potomac or 20 minutes to the Shenandoah for the better smallmouth fishing; which use to produce some of those a bass-a-cast 2 hours in the river and 1 hour in the bar evenings. Sometimes, later in the summer when it was better just to enjoy the upper 70's water temps in the 90+ heat & 90+ humidity; just sat on a rock in the river & let the fly drift downstream, which inevitably led to another bass on the line without even fishing it....but then the decision was when would I have to reel it in to release it
