    Default ? on ferrule removal

I got a Shakespeare Wonderod in a trade. The cork is in good shape, the guides were all messed up. I removed them, and I also noticed that the ferrule on the butt section is crooked. I wanted to remove it and reinstall it straight.

My problem is that I can't figure out how to remove it. What would be the best way?

Also what would be the best way to remove the old finish that is stuck to the blank?

    Thanks

little heat will remove the ferrule. As far as the finish I would sand it with some light sandpaper such as 1500 or 3000 grit just till smooth and then add the new finish back on it.

dont forget the ferrule may also have a pin that holds it in place as well as being glued on...

    I don't see a pin....would it be obvious?

I tried boiling water, but it didn't seem to loosen the glue...maybe I didn't boil it long enough. About how long does it usually take?

    Here's the crooked ferrule:

Here's the finish I want to remove:

    The grip and reel seat:

I don't want to sand off the spiral finish, just remove the coating that was over the wraps.

Thanks for the responses. Keep 'em coming.

I got the ferrule off and I'm chipping the old "rod coat" off.

A lighter loosened the ferrule up enough that I could pull it off. I heated the tip top up and it shot off the end like a rocket...

The old rod coat is brittle enough that it can be chipped off of the rod. I'm using a fletching stripper to chip it away.

It's a spinning rod, but if I can remove the cork and reel seat, preferably without destroying them, I'm thinking about making a fly rod out of it.

So, my next question is. What is the best way to safely remove the cork and reel seat?

    Thanks

Remove them same as you did the ferrule...I have taken a few old ones off...hot water should do i t....the glue is usually pretty brittle around the handles/cork.

You'll probably have to strip the cork off with a pliers, just grab and twist after heating, it'll crumble off leaving the epoxyy residue behind.
