    Chris,
I enjoy your pictures and your comments. I didn't know temps in Quebec rose to the danger point. But I do remember catching Lake trout in a chain of lakes while fishing for pan fish. It was in a lake with cold water overlain with warm and the bass season hadn't opened yet. It was in Ontario though, I only remember Chafie's Locks as a small village where we could get supplies. That was about 45 years ago. I'll have to look your most beautiful area up on a map. Who knows, I may be up that way before I go to the happy fishing grounds.

    Thanks for your reply,
    Bill

    Bill,

I didn't know temps in Quebec rose to the danger point
On the river, not so hot as to make a kill off, and probably not as bad as some of the rivers in the USA last summer, ... but when the water's warm to the touch, IMHO, the Salmon and Trout "can't" be comfortable.

We'll see the fish hanging in 12 inches of water where springs of cooler water bubble up. They know they're in a stress situation, .. just doesn't seem reasonable to fish for them.

    Christopher,
I am in absolute agreement with you! Fortunately when trout are showing any sign of stress most of the fly fishers go for Small Mouthed Bass. They average a little small here when fishing with flies in the daytime but they are a lot of fun on one to three weight rods.

I always look forward to your posts.

I basically release everything that I am not going to eat that night. I don't see the point in freezing fish and then eating them. Might as well let Kroger take care of that.

More often than not, I just release the trout, and keep saltwater fish. Reds, Specks, and Flounder taste best anyway.

One final exception, I have been known to use fly caught sunfish and piggies as free-lined bait. Stacked deer hair and wool can't beat the real thing.

    Bill,

Warm water here is one of the reasons I might call a client to ask if they would like to put off a booked outting.

When I know the client will be releasing fish (since I ask up front BEFORE booking), I'll express my concerns about survival rates when the water is warm.

In some of the pools here, you can see the salmon and trout schooling near springs. I have the impression they ar gasping when they open their mouthes.

    Morning Anglers!
Here in Gaspe (Quebec) catch and release is mandatory (as follows):
St-Jean river (all season) June 1 to Sept 30.

Dartmouth: mandatory (June 1 to July 15th) on the 14th they count the salmon in the river and if they judge there are enough ( adult salmon) then it will open July 16th to September 30th where you can keep salmon. Has been the case for a few years.

York River: mandatory June 1 to June 21st.
June 22nd until the mid-season count ( end of July) you can keep salmon. If the end of July count shows many adult salmon, it will stay open to keep fish until Sept 30th. ( has been the case for many years.

Note: when it's catch and release ( it's for salmon over 63cm.you can keep grilses)

We try to promote Catch and Release.

    Ann !

    Morning to you Anne,

I guess I should be more precise,... When I said I might ask clients if they wanted to delay a booking as they are going C&R and te water is very warm, that applies more so for the sea run brook trout fishery we have here.

Salmon (over 63cm) are C&R already, for trout its volontary.

Here in Holland we are almost out of real traout rivers. What we catch on these rivers is mostly catch and release. There are also two big lakes with rainbow and brown trout. On one of them there is only catch and release and on the other you can take ,limited, fish. I prefer catch and release, because there are not enough places where you can catch trout. Maybe when it is more like in other countries (good rivers and trout lakes)I think I would take now and then the fish home.
I know that in Belgium you can buy a no kill card which gives you the possibility to fish on more rivers (Ardennes).

    Hi:

In Bolivia we catch and release most of the time. There is no law, just lots of respect from the few of us. The again, I have friends who bait and spoon fish that don't ever release. Guess they will never come to my secret places! There really isn't a law about that here.
