Indeed WD-40 will "freeze" ...it is the propellant that is in the aerosol can...it builds up a lacquer like substance.

It is not present in the bulk form that you put in a hand sprayer.

Duck hunting with an automatic and being lazy I decided to spray it every time I went out using the canned stuff and knowing what would eventually happen...as time went on the action would get slower but each time I sprayed it it would recover....well finally...after averaging 2x /week for 3 seasons it was just too much...so it was cleaning time.

That lacquer like stuff was really built up in there ...almost had to chip it out...but I can tell you "brake cleaner" is really effective as a cleaner and solvent.

I've used the bulk stuff with no problem and it is a nice protectant to use as you start a rainy day....does evaporate.

I don't use it on my fishing stuff though....pretty sure it clouded a finish on one of my rods....there I got back to fishing.
