Default What do you wear when it rains?

I'm looking for a breathable rainjacket to wear while on the stream. It doesn't need to pack lightly, but it does need to keep the rain off. Price is also a factor...[Mom and Dad (bless their hearts) slipped me a little birthday money, and a rain jacket is next on my list.]

I see that LLBean has a jacket which they call the "Emerger" for $79.00. It meets my criteria, but I've only viewed it on line...
Any suggestion (besides a green garbage bag with cleverly placed holes)?

As always, your advice is appreciated.

    Andrew

    Andrew,
I have a set of Frogg Toggs...I bought mine 2 years ago thru their website...in orange, was a closeout...I paid $37.00shipped for jacket & pants. Last time i looked on their site, there was no closeout sale. I think the set retails for around $60.00 or so. I love mine...lightweight, breathable, & dry.

    Hi Andrew

I haven't had much luck with cheaper breathables. They seem to work for a year or two and start to leak. I'm afraid its a case of you get what you pay for. I used a rubberized canvas Poncho until I could afford a good breathable. I still carry a green garbage bag just in case

    Regards Mike

That Emerger wading jacket of L.L. Beans does seem like a nice jacket. It may not breath as well as some of the more expensive, nor last as long but the price is low and it looks like a very functional design.

I have a Patagonia wading jacket; it is very well made and does a great job of keeping me dry and comfortable but it costs quite a bit more. I bought Patagonia because of the quality, the guarantee and their contribution to environmental projects.

I wear a breathable non-fly fishing jacket I got on a great sale from Cabela's. Bought one big enough to fit over my chest vest. It also serves as my outer layer for cold weather fishing.

There's no law anywhere that says your rain gear has to be specifically designed for fly fishing. The fish don't seem to mind.

You might check out [url=http://www.sierratradingpost.com:c478d]www.sierratradingpost.com[/url:c478d] to see if they hae anything suitable going. They usually have some good prices. Also look in the fly fishing catalogs' bargain barn and closeout pages.

    Good luck with it

JC, are you talking about the Chota Deluxe Wading Jacket?

That is a great jacket. Almost got one but I was in a hurry and picked up the Patagonia instead. I really like the Chota jacket. The integrated hat/hood that turns with your head is really innovative.

    Andrew -

Another suggestion is to look on Ebay. People periodically sell premium rain jackets like Simms and Patagonia there, some new or nearly so, at deeply discounted prices.
