    Default Wading staff dilemma

    Hi folks,
I bought a Fishpond Waterdance chest pack and I love it. However, I am not able to place my Folstaff wading staff sheath/holster onto the belt of the pack because the loop where the belt would go through the holster is too narrow. (The staff is about 18 years old so the newer models may have addressed the wider wading belts.) The holster has a small hole at the top of the holster loop which might allow me to run a leather loop through but in so doing I would sacrifice the stability of the holster which could be dangerous if I needed to pull the staff out quickly. The pack itself has some smaller compression straps that would allow the holster to be attached but again it would not be positioned so as to allow a quick pull of the staff. I have spent an entire day looking for a solution in terms of attachment and/or some generic holster that might work. I am considering calling Folstaff to ask if they have any alternative holsters available. Do any of you have any suggestions?? Thanks in advance for any help or brainstorms you might have.

You may be ignoring a simple solution. Just use one of your old leather belts for the holster. Perhaps not elegant, but decidedly pragmatic. After all, it is not written in stone that only one belt can be worn.

Without a photo of the holster...I can't really figure out how to help you, BUT taking a guess at what the setup is like. Did you consider taking a piece of nylon webbing and sewing a bigger loop over the old one. I'm just guessing that what you have there is like this??

You can get nylon webbing at outdoor outfitters and at some sewing stores.

That too!! EXCEPT he said it was part of the chest pack. If it's like mine...there's no changing it. Then again...why not use a wading belt (along with the chest pack)?? That's what I do.

I would also think twice about using that as a chest pack. It's really designed to be a lumbar pack. I would use it like a shoulder bag and use the lumbar belt just to keep it in place and out of the way. You could also sew a couple of smaller pieces of nylon webbing, with a quick release clip, onto the waste band of the pack... OR sew the holster on to the pack belt.

If you have a canvas or upholstery shop nearby take the holster to them. Probably do a professional job cheap, or a cheap job professionally. If the holster is plastic or hard leather you might have it riveted to the belt, but that would be a little extreme.Jim

    gerri:

I just tried a 2" wide nylon web belt through the newest of my Folstaf holsters and it and the slider went through fine.

If the Fishpond Waterdance utilizes standard nylon webbing and a quick disconnect clip I'm thinking it should go through the latest Folstaf holster just fine. The belt loop opening appears to be about 2-1/2" long X 3/4" wide.

You may want to take a change buying one from Fly Tyer's Carry All or maybe testing the fit at a fly shop near you that carries Folstaf and asking them to order you a holster.
