These warranties seem to have the effect of helping companies sell very high priced rods. Unfortunately for the consumer (us!), it is very difficult to figure out whether the high priced rod with the guarantee is "better" than a lower priced alternative. The only way to find out is with extentive test casting and fishing - most of us do not have that time nor opportunity.

I suspect some of the problem is that the drive to produce ligher rods has produced some fragile rods - hence the attraction of guarantees.

My prediction - extended warantees will be offered on all fishing products as an add-on at the cash register. Last week I was offered an extended warranty on a $10 minor appliance at K mart for an extra $2. The same marketing people will soon be hired to give us the "opportunity" to spend an extra 15% - 30% to insure our rods, reels, vices, scissors, bobbins, hair stackers and hackle pliers!
