When I hear someone say that the first thing they look at in a new rod is the warranty, all I can think is "where is your personal responsibility?".

Orvis did a disservice to us all when they started this crap.

Why do you think a $200 rod cost $600 to sell, because they will likely have to replace it a couple of times.

I broke a rod a few months ago to my own stupid behavior, and that's it. I got it at a bargain price to begin with, new at a trade show, and I'll look for a replacement.

On the other hand, I build boats as a hobby, and I want nothing but kind words from my customers. Even though there is no written warranty, I have fixed everything that has come back even when I suspect foul play or pour judgement.

I feel the mis-use of "Warranty" only serves to drive the up cost of products. My .02$

Somewhere in here a long time ago was a post or article on "Unconditional Warrenties" and their affect on rod costs.
Do they tend to make some of us less careful with our equipment?

i hear apochraphal tales of fly fishers intentionally breaking rods to get new ones, but i personally don't know of a fly fisher who has ever done that. i can't even bring myself to sell a fly rod i've owned, no less break one intentionally. my guess is most feel the same as me.

On a similar note, My $500.00 Sony Digital Camera came with a 1yr guarantee against defects in manufacture. Dunking in water, dropping it or misuse of ANY type negated the
guarantee. BTW: One can actually quantify the components/results value of a $500 camera.
Unfortunately, I took a "swim in the Snake" with this camera in my pocket. Cost me $135.00 ( prepaid) to have it repaired just outside the guarantee period.
If fishing rods had similar guarantees, they would "shirley" be priced at their "true/fair " value.

PS: I now also own a Pentax Optio WP ( waterproof) for obvious reasons. Same guarantee as the Sony.

i'm confused. i don't think the rod companies are losing money on returns; in fact i think it is built into the price. so you are in effect paying for a guarantee but won't take advantage of it? And where does politcal correctness fit into all of this? seems a stretch to me...

I'm with Micus. If Rod Company X decides to take away the warranty and lower their prices then I'll still buy the rods. But I haven't seen much of that happening.

How much would they have to lower the price for you to feel all warm and fuzzy about buying a rod without the no fault warrenty??
