    Default Central Ohio fly fishing

    Hi everyone,

I am new to the sport of fly fishing, and also new to the area of central Ohio. I have been watching the boards here at FAOL,and I know you all have answers to everything. I was wondering what are some of the best flies for fishing central Ohio.

    Thanks for your help
    Mike

    Hey Mike,

I've got in-laws in Columbus, and have recently discovered the abundance of warm water fishing in the area (my wife doesn't know whether my new enthusiasm for visiting the in-laws is a good thing). Check out the Ohio DNR website for a map showing the state scenic rivers, there are several options in Central Ohio, and from what I've seen, they don't get nearly the pressure they deserve.

Not sure if I will get in trouble for mentioning another bulletin board here, but look up Ohio Game Fishing for some good regional information.

As far as favorite flies for Ohio, I think you should decide on your target first, and then check out previous posts about favorite flies for different species.

For browns ya might wanna try the Mad River or in the Mohican State Park.

    Hey Mike,

I hail from the Columbus area originally myself. Spent most of my life fishing the Big Darby near Plain City - popular area for Smallmouth Bass, Rock Bass, and the occasional Carp for most Columbus fisherman. Great river to fish if you never have - lots of easy access.

As for flies for the area, it would really depend on where you are fishing. If you are fishing for panfish/bass in the area, the best river flies I've found have been foam indicator ants, San Juan Worms, or other emerger type patterns of my own design. Now, if you are fishing the Mad River for Browns, just about any brown, tan, or olive dries will work. I've had alot of luck in the past with BWO patterns. If you've never gone there in before, you may want to check out Mad River Outfitters (http://www.madriveroutfitters.com)on Bethel Road near 315 (same shopping center as Micro Center and Marshalls). They can help you with anything relating to the Mad.

Best of luck to you. Still wished I lived in the area so I could fish the Darbys, the Big Walnut, or Alum Creek.
