I always just show them my fly if they ask. The exception being a very polite 12-year old last summer on a high-altitude lake who couldn't hook any greenback cutthroats on a dry fly, while I was 50 feet away and raking them in on a #22 scud. He kept edging closer and closer to me, watching, until he worked up the courage to ask. I gave him a fly and a couple strips of twist-on lead, showed him how far away from the fly to put the sinker, and I retired for the day to have lunch and watch. After he hooked up 3 times, I got to see him hike over to Dad's spot and show him how it was done!

Happy kid, happy Dad, and happy observer. All catch and release for those greenbacks here in Colo., so they were big -- the kid got one that was at least 15". And the little punk's roll cast was better than mine!

Always encourage kids to fish!
