One of my carp fishing buddies discovered a mother lode of carp last summer by the outdoor deck at a local restaurant. The deck is located on a back water of the Missouri River and the backwater area is loaded with carp. Observing the diners one evening while fishing he discovered that a number of them, kids mostly, were tossing french fries to the carp. The fish were eating them as fast as they were tossed into the water.

Thus was born a fly made from foam he dubbed the French Fly.

I know that this thread is about which fly to choose, but after landing literally hundreds of carp on the fly I believe that fly selection is much less important than presentation. Yes fly selection can save the day on certain days, but most of the time it is how you approach and present to the fish and not what is on the end of the line.

    Stay quiet

don't cast a shadow on the fish

Restrict rapid movement around the fish.

put the bait in the VERY VERY SMALL strike zone

Understand the difference between signal and noise. In otherwords, know when you have a bite vs no bite and the difference can be difficult for many to master. If all else fails set the hook on ANYTHING that is outside the norm. To be able to do this you must understand the norm.

More times than not it is how you do it, not what you do it with, but most anglers prefer to buy or make the magic fly that will provide success. That is a big mistake in my book.

Have fun with fly selection, it is part of the hobby and a grand time. I start tying flies with the local TU on Tuesday nights starting this coming week and am looking forward to it. Just don't put most of the eggs in your basket on looking for the perfect fly. Put most of the eggs in the basket that talks about fishing skills.

My 2 Favorites are the Aggravator and the Kauffman golden stones! I fish about 20+ days a year for my goldens and these catch 80% of my fish!

When I get the chance to fish for carp, this is the one I use the most. I call it a cdc corn fly. John

Dave it will float for a little bit then is will submerge just under the suface. You can coat it with floatant if you want it to continue to float. John
