Bread Fly?

I know there are bread fly patterns out there. I need to look into them a bit more closely. I was fly-fishing a city park earlier this year, and folks were throwing bread chunks to the ducks. I saw a number of large carp enjoying this feast too. I tossed my flies right in amongst the bread and just let them set, but didn't have any takers. I don't recall what I was using...

Anyway, as I sit here, I was picturing what bread looks like in water, and how it sort of breaks apart and dissolves... Wouldn't a bunch of white marabou tightly palmered around the hookshank sort of look like wet bread?
Has anybody tried this, or come across another "bread" pattern that has worked for them?

I can't find the picture right now, but I have tied a Flesh Fly that we used for steelhead on the rivers in Michigan. Basically it was dirty white marabou. I'll have to dig around to see if I can find the pic.

The ones I've heard of were made of loosely spun deer hair but here are some other ideas:

From the looks of it, your idea about marabou is probably on exactly the right track.

white chenille wrapped on a hook should work

tan chenille for wheat bread

tye in foam strip off the back of the hook, dub white egg yarn "body" in a loop, pull foam over the back tie off.

This isn't something I have actually tried but it seems reasonable

We use bread flies here in Florida for mullet. just spin some deer hair and shape into an oval. (No crust)

all of the above ideas should work but you need to berley the water up to be effective.

Dave,Try a small block of white foam tied midshank on the hook for floatation, then add some white marabou. Works fine. Only problem is that some people get a little grumpy when you start catching the fish they're trying to feed.Oh well. Kevin

Thanks for the ideas, gents! People love feeding the ducks at the pond I was fishing. They aren't intentionally feeding the fish, but apparently a lot more bread is thrown than the ducks care to eat. Many times I've seen what appears to be the remnants of almost an entire loaf of bread washed up on the shore! And otherwise the carp in there tend to stay out-of-sight.

I fished there on night after dark, and there's a streetlight close by that lights up the water just a bit. There was BIG carp poking around the shoreline near me, but I couldn't seem to interest it in the flies I was using. It was a 30"+ fish, and I was shaking in my shoes with the thought of hooking into that beauty...or beast?

I've been told that grass carp learn to take bread too, and I've heard about one public pond in particular where the grass carp like to chow on all the bread folks toss in there.
And I REALLY wanna catch a grass carp on my fly rod!
