I seem to recall a time when seasonal greetings were universal. Nobody cared which one they received and nobody was offended.

If you said "Merry Christmas" to a non Christian, they smiled and returned the same greeting. If one of my Orthodox friends said "Chanukah Sameach" to me; I smiled and said the same.

Fear of offending someone never played into our decision on which greeting to offer. The most important thing was the season, the greeting, the fellowship and friendship being shared and the mutual respect we had for each other beliefs. That respect didn't include the necessity to correct the person if they said the wrong thing to the wrong person. All that was needed was a smile.

THAT'S the way it should be...
