    Default Mossy Creek

Has anyone here fished a stream called Mossy Creek in Viginia. I'm going to be fishing it this weekend and I hear it is a real killer. Any help would be appreciated.

Fished Mossy Creek many, many times and will again!

    1. It's all private property! About 1 1/2 miles are open to the public, by permit!
    2. Permit to fish is free, good for 1 yr. Get it from the Game & Inland Fisheries Dept, Veronia, Va.
    3. Mossy is a REAL creek. Can jump across in spots, VERY deep in spots.
    4. Full of water cress (weed) which makes for some real technical fishing.
    5. Seen trout in excess of 24", but have never caught one, as they are spooky, SMART and have seen EVERY trick in the book. How good are YOU?
    6. Want a REAL CHALLENGE & maybe catch one heck of fish! Go to Mossy!
    7. Stop by the Mossy Creek Fly Shop in Bridgewater, VA for map & free advice.

Now what a friend & I did once, was to hire a "guide" out of the Mossy Creek Fly Shop for the day. He had access to a "SPECIAL" section of Mossy away from the public access. This guide stocked this section himself weekly! Friend and I never tied on a fly! The guide did all the work! We caught about 32 that day, biggest browns we ever saw! The guide, well we felt like we had known him all our lives! We had a BALL and he helped us improve our casting by 100%.
Was it worth the $. YES, every penny! Happy fishing~

I have access to some private water on Mossy Creek via a connection. I fish primarily saltwater flats, but like to hit trout water when I can. I'll probably get skunked but, what the hell. At least I can say I fished the Mossy.

I fished Mossy about this time of year a couple years ago. The water is incredibly clear and shallow and you'd swear there isn't a fish in the the place, but they've got lots of places to hide with all of the underwater vegetation. Super spooky fish (at least along the "public" section) so look for some riffled runs to help your approach. The gameplan, as it was told to me, was to throw deer hair cricket patterns when nothing is going on. I got their early and was kind of discouraged by noon when suddenly the tricos turned on and it was a whole other ball game. Take trico patterns in 20, 22, 24 if the local shops say there is a chance they will be around. The fish loved 'em. Basically check with the shops or someone who knows because it doesn't fish like your typical hatchery freestone... not by a long shot. Good luck! and let us know how you do.

Oh just remembered, there is a photo of Mossy on my website on the "accessories" page if you want to see what you're heading for. Please pardon the fact that I sell stuff and just look at the picture at the top right. The place obviously had an impact on me, can't wait to go back!

Normally I wouldn't think it would be cool to put info on the net about a small place like Mossy, but I think it's impossible to pressure Mossy any more than it already is.

Mossy is my favorite place to fish in the Commonwealth of Virginia. If you catch fish there then you are doing something right. There are tons of fish in there so if you are not catching anything then you probably need to rethink what you are doing. If you are fishing the public section, then park and take a long walk.

When fishing Mossy I usually carry two rods with me, one rigged with a big streamer and one rigged for drys and terrestrials. If you are fishing streamers, think sculpin patterns and make sure the fly is getting near the bottom.

The fish will be in spawn mode this time of year, I don't think there is any successful spawning in there, but the fish go through the motions anyways.

    Dunfly,

Sorry I didn't see your post that you were fishing private water. You are a lucky dog, good luck.
