I'm going deer hunting on Dec. 1 in PA. What would you consider the best part of the hide (besides the tail) to keep for fly tying purposes? I thought I might keep a piece this year.
Thanks for the opinions.

The rump and along the spine have the best hair for spinning, but the belly hair doesn't need to be bleached
The finer 'mask' hair is good for winging trout flies
The simpler the outfit, the more skill it takes to manage it, and the more pleasure one gets in his achievements.

im sorry but i have to disagreewith you there. the rump is very good, but along the spine?!?!?!?!? ive got full deer hides, and the fur along the spine is HORRIBLE for spinning... most often it wont flare at all. the fur closer to the spine is much finer and better for things like wings, or any uses where you dont want it to flare.the belly fur is best is by far the best for spinning.
sorry if it sounds like im being rude or anything. im just suprised by what you said.
Get a swatch from every area of the deer & label what area it is from. Every part of the hide has a special use for fly tying (you will find that use & be happy that you are nicely supplied) !!!
