For me, 10% has always just been a starting place. As with most things in life, paying attention and being involved with what is going on adds more inerest and often more quality. Of course, for some of us, it does get a bit out of hand - grin - but I guess that's pretty harmless, too.

Not all threads/ materials work well at 10%, but it's a rule of thumb that gets things going. I once tried a strand of fine copper wire - I don't recommend it!

I prefer a very fine, compact furl all along the length of my leaders, others like them more loosely twisted. Sounds like you're finding a good solution for you.
