Thread: Brown Hackle Fly

    Default Brown Hackle Fly

    Has anyone heard of a fly by this name? I was talking with some friends at work today and on of them talked of this fly. He says it is an older fly and not too many people fish it. He does not have any with him so I could not see what one looks like. I have done some searches on line but have not found it yet.
    Can any one help me with this one?
    Thanks for any and all help.

    Default Brown Hackle

    He may be referring to the Brown Hackle Peacock. I use it as a Grannom emerger in the spring tied on a size 14 hook. I just make a peacock rope and wrap it to a about 3 eye lengths from the hook eye. I tie on some brown hackle and make 1 to 2 turns and tie it off. I fish it as a dropper up in the water column. It works well for me at that time. The original Brown Hackle Peacock may have a wet fly type wing on it. There's also gray hackle peacocks and whatever you can dream up. I think they are all taken from the original Brown Hackle Peacock. I think some have a gold tag at the tail, a red tag or even a tail. I may be wrong about all of this history, but I do fish the brown hackle peacock as I previously mentioned.

    Eric-

    Maybe this one? It's a brown bivisible, tied with brown hackle palmered over the body, with a white hackle wrapped around the front to help you see it. It's an old timey dry fly, simple and still works...

    Hi,

    I've found two dressings at the web site below, both listed as dry flies, but a lot of older flies were dressed either dry or wet. The 2nd listed is the same as mentioned above.

    BROWN HACKLE - Red tail, body red, yellow or green floss, brown hackle.
    BROWN HACKLE - Red tail, peacock herl body, brown hackle.

    Epuffer;

    I hope you're happy !! With that question you just overloaded my bookmarks, and left me absolutely no time to do anything at all but tie. You are truly evil lol lol. Gonna be a long winter for me ha ha ha
    Never thought about all those flies, BUT gotta try them, RIGHT ?

    All joking aside, that was a great walk through history.

    Thanks

    brown hackle peacock ---- brown hackle, peacock body, brown tail, put a gold rib on now you have a gallagher. gray hackle peacock----- grizzly hackle, peacock body, grizzly tail. put a gold or silver rib on now you have a water boy. boy it been a long time, i don't know if water boy is right, the fly is from the lehighton area, it been a long time that i fished it, about forty five years. i fished it on top fly on a three fly cast, on the lehigh river at white haven. gallagher also out fish it, then the gray hackle peacock did too. flyman 3 pottsville
