    Question Varivas hooks

Has anyone heard of this brand? I've heard they make some nice light wire hooks for emergers and scuds. WHO SELLS THEM ? thanks.

Very popular hooks in the UK. No idea who sells them or makes them. Will check with the lads in the UK though.

They are made in Japan. Dealers in the US seem to have difficulty getting these hooks. Lakeland Fly Fishing in the UK carries a lot of Varivas stuff, including hooks. I've never done business with them, but the lads on the UK site like the company. Their addy is http://www.lakelandflytying.com/226/Varivas.aspx

Varivas is the third most popular hook brand in Japan, following TMC and Gamakatsu. As noted, their dry fly hooks are super fine. I really like their IWI F-2000 and IWI T-2000, both of which are 2x fine. They are a lot of fun to tie on but demand extra care while fishing and removing. Boxes sell for about $5.00 for 30 hooks.

They also recently came out with a 2410V Deep Wide Wet hook which lends itself to some great wet flies.

Here is the link to their product line up with photos of the hooks and example flies.

Here is a link to a bunch of cool Japanese hooks that haven't made their way over here:

    Default They're heeeeere....

In this neck of the woods, we've been using Varivas hooks to tie our Tricos for years now. The old #988 hook was replaced with the #2300 Ultra Midge hook. The description on the box says the 2300 is a 4X Fine Micro barb Half Long taper point - yikes! These hooks have a wide gap which gives a much better hookup rate than say a Tiemco #100 (in a size 26, which is about the same shank length as a Mustad #94840 in a size 24). These are easily the best hooks for tying Tricos I've ever found - even better than the Partridge Marinaro midge hooks.

Was in this fly shop today, and they have a whole bunch of Varivas hooks in stock in several styles:
