What are your favorite fly pattern's for fall (Sept. Oct), we here in Va. have had some cool nights. I 'm talking the one or two patterns the cool air might get you to thinking about, wondering if you have enough on hand or that you need to tye up some more of those...

    Grubb -

Last fall the fly I fished most often was a simple pine squirrel zonker streamer ( in sculpin olive and unweighted ). Fished off a Class II full sinking line, it was a killer for browns on both the Henry's Fork and the South Fork of the Snake, and one of our smaller mountain streams for cutthroats.

Thanks for the reminder about fall - like waking up at 34F yesterday in the mountains of Western Wyoming wasn't reminder enough !!

In October my flies target October Caddis for the Idaho fish in.
    Some muddlers
    Dippers ( Yellow sallies )
    Lady Mc connells
    Bigger spiders than summer spiders.
A bit bigger tom thumbs in fall.
    thats about it.

In winter I tie everything that looks interesting to tie. It has nothing to do with fishing and everything to do with shack nasties.
Then in Spring my ties are all targeting spring fishing.

For fall I use a Stayner Ducktail (use it year round), Halloween Leach, and for drys I use Caddis and pink alberts depending on where I am fishing.

I'm heading up to the Ausable (NY) for 10 days on Labor Day, and have always had pretty good luck with large terrestrials, bead-headed prince fished under a LARGE stimulator, black or olive buggers and hoppers if the wind is up. Wish me luck!!!

My favorite description of luck is from Woody Hayes quoting Amos Alonzo Stagg - "Luck is a residue of skill." You'll have to take it from there on your trip to the AuSable.
