Thread: Anyone ever float-fished the upper Gunnison???

Question Anyone ever float-fished the upper Gunnison???

I'm going to be up in Gunnison, CO this weekend with my Dad. I plan to fish the public catch & release section of Taylor river below Taylor Park Reservoir on Saturday and probably Monday too.

On Sunday, we have a guide scheduled to float the Gunnison River from Almont down to near Blue Mesa Reservoir. This is actually a part of the Gunnison I've never even fished, let alone floated. I'm wondering what to expect. I know that we'll be floating in a modified raft fitted with a special frame so you can stand and fish on a solid floor. I don't think you can take a drift boat down this section because I've heard it can get pretty shallow in places (I would probably take mine and skip the guide otherwise).

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the trip, and would love to hear anyone else's previous experience. Thanks!!!

I floated it about a month ago and had a blast.
expect a nice number of fish, many lost flies and maybe some rain.

it's a great float. wear sunscreen.

Should be caddis, gray, #16, and some PMDs, also in 16. The Taylor through the canyon on FS lands is actually a great river to fish, and fun. If I wasn't working I might be fishing that myself this weekend.

Then again, since I AM working this weekend, I might see you over there anyway.

I can only hope that one day I get that chance but if you go to my blog site
http://matokuwapi.spaces.live.com/ there is a video on the right hand side, fourth one down. You will see a picture of Joe Humphreys looking like he's thumbing a ride. If you click on it, he will give you a quick casting lesson then take you on a beautiful float trip down the Black Canyon on the Gunnison. It's too bad that its not in HD but you'll still get the drift. (I made a pun )

    Mato,
I fished the upper Gunny North of the town of Gunnison. You're thinking of the lower Gunny below Blue Mesa reservoir.

I posted a trip report here if anyone's interested. Thanks for all ofthe tips!!!
