First of all, hat's off to Mr. Jeffrey Hamm for his inspiration with his FOTW, the Spider Spider!

I took that idea and edited it a bit for my purposes by using a small strip of Razor Foam for the back on a #12 hook. Then I put the fly at the end of a four foot Uni thread furled leader, spit on it and cast it out into the pond.

The fly tried to float. But with only that strip of Razor Foam it's already riding the ragged edge of flotation. The leader gets wet, soaked really well and begins to sink, pulling the fly on down into the depths.

Deep enough that I couldn't see it, I hooked into a series of bluegill until one was followed to the top by a quite massive bullhead close to eighteen inches long. I suspect the same bullhead was who stole my fly two drifts later when the rod bent double and the 7X tippet went "prang".

This was all at 1:00 in the afternoon in Texas which to me is pretty impressive as most summertime fishing has shut down by that time.
