3 of us went fishing with one of the local charter captains, who happens to be in our local FFF group, to target steelhead in the open water on fly in Lake Erie.
At 5 am the wind was blowing 17 kts with gusts to 23kts ---so even with 300 & 400gr lines--- casting off the boat was going to be interesting. The plan was to put out planer boards and troll til we got a pattern and set out flies and a control on the other side with spoons to help locate the fish but we started with 3-5 ft seas so the planer board array was going to be a chore so we put out dipsey divers with spoons and flies off downriggers...
Well they hated our flies and so did the walleye or they didnt want anything behind the boat or it was THE BANNANA or the cameras or the cold front.
We ended the day going 2 for 3 on steelhead (one broke the 20# leader on the strike)and got a bonus of 8 or 10 walleye and a few white bass --all of the dipsey divers and spoons---we couldnt catch anything off spoons on the downriggers so we thought they were boat shy. Tomorrow they will go out again in calmer seas and try to get some planer boards out to get the flies away from the boat. Heres a pic of a nice fat 28" silver bullet.
