In as much as flyfishing, I've never seen this kind of thing either. I have seen some elitist attitudes in my lifetime, but when fishing, everyone seems pretty happy to let folks alone, or help them improve their fishing.
I met a couple of guys who fished "correctly", if you will. One of them asked if I was catching all the good trout. I responded that I hadn't caught anything at all that day. He handed me a couple of #22 brassies and some of his 7X froghair and told me how to fish them, then said if I needed more help just come ask him.
He didn't care which rod I was using, what brand line I had, how many pockets my vest had, etc. He just wanted to make sure I was catching. That's a "real" fisherman, IMO.
