It always pains me to hear people talk about resting the butt of a fly rod on the ground. There is no reason to do that. You can string a rod up by holding it in the middle with one hand which you thrust rearward. This gives you access to the upper guides. If you have to put the rod down there are many other options besides resting the butt on the ground. You can rest the butt on your foot, or lay the rod across the branches of a tree or bush. I never lay a rod butt on the ground. Not even my cheapie beater rods.
