Thread: Black Gnat tied with all white materials.

Default Black Gnat tied with all white materials.

I like to tie a fly with a pattern identical to a Black Gnat except with all white materials to use as a dropper for Bluegill, Shellcrracker & Crappie. Or in a Blue line stream as the only fly. Sometimes the fish KILL the white wet fly! My question is: What is the Name of the white version of Black Gnat?

That's what I call it. I can't find a pattern for a 'White Gnat' anywhere I've looked so I figure it's called something else.

white wulff or a coffin fly

would be the closest patterns to a white "black" gnat dry fly.

    Hmm,

    There's a White Miller:

    Tail: white fibres
Rib : silver wire or flat silver tinsel
    Body: white floss (or wool)
    hackle: white (collar or throat)
    wing: white

I think there are a few variations on this, as indicated by the alternative dressings. What I call a black gnat is almost identical, just all black (tail of the black tying thread as a rib).

I have to agree with Jeff on this one. There are a lot of variations to the White Miller but that would be the white version of a Black Gnat to me.
