    Default Parachute Posts

    What do you guys use for parachute posts? If you're using some kind of yarn, where do you get it and what should I look for?

    Looking for ideas.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Jeff,

    Depending on what I have on hand, antron yarn, polypro yarn, turkey flats, foam posts.

    If I'm buying something I'll look for the waterproof polypro (I believe Al Beatty is the one who mentioned using that).

    calf body hair, calf tail, turkey flats, poly yarn, fibers from a plastic duster, hi-vis fibers or whatever else looks like it might work.

    We keep going back to Calf Body hair. It is very easy to see, does not absorb water easily, and durable. There are a few patterns we use something else, Isonychia (I have a antron that is a great color and is real effective) and Green Drake / Coffin (We use what was called a sail wing. It is 2 mallard dyed yellow-green for the GR Drake or 2 Teal or Gadwall for the coffin that are tied back to back so they stick straight up). In general we use white but for some customers we match the insect wing color or use a color easier to see in the foam yellow, orange, pink, etc.

    Calf hair. Comb it out. Stack. Put the tips at the bend end. Gives a great tapered body.

    If I'm tying #18 or smaller, some kind of yarn I can see. Even hot pink.

    Try these;

    Ultra chenille ( vernille, suede chenille) also makes a very good post, easy to work with;

    various furs and hairs like calf tail also make good wings and posts;

    Also makes excellent and easy detached bodies for a range of flies;

    Lots of possibilities including various yarns, polypropylene cord, ( split and combed out, makes good indicators as well!).

    For the Antron and Polyprop yarns and cords, where are you guys getting that stuff?

    I was at the Hobby Loby yesterday and didn't see anything jump out at me that looked right. Are you getting it there, or is there something else I should look at?

    With the feathers, yarn, patches of fur and thread, my den is starting to look like the sewing room for a really twisted Broadway Musical costume designer.

    Rug yarn
    The stuff they sell for making hooked rugs
    Useful for all kinds of stuff

    Hi Viz for everything because of the variety of colors & ease of use.

    I don't worry about seeing my fly as long as I THINK I know where it is so I tend to match the colors of the natural bug.
