Default Fly reels for big bad Fish?

The past few years I have mainly fished Atlantic Salmon in Labrador. Durring the big run fish average 15-25 lbs. I have been using a 9/10 LoonOutdoors Lochsa Reel and it has worked pretty well. Now I am looking to get another. Before I do, I would love to hear your opinions on any reel that you feel I should at least interview for the job.

    Cheers!

Definitely Big fish and lots of water. The Abel is a good reel from what I have read, the only dislike I have is for a 9wt your looking at 8 plus oz.

    Gobrock -

Haven't fished anything that big, but based on their reputation and my experience with the Abel Super 4 and the Abel TR1, I would second Ray's recommendation.

    But Abels are pricey.

Right now, Sierra Trading Post, has some Lamson reels that might suit your needs. I don't have any experience with Lamson, but I know some really good fisherman who swear by them.

Go to www.sierratradingpost.com, go to outdoor gear, go to fishing, go to reels, and select Lamson. They have some other brands available but I didn't check them out. If you haven't dealt with STP, rest assured that their prices are almost unbeatable, their return policy is first rate, and their customer service is top notch. If you find two that you like, order them both to see which one you want ( if you can afford to do that ) and return the one you don't want. Cuts down on shopping time and S&H.

Good luck finding a reel. Better luck with the fishing.

In my opinion, any well-made reel will work just fine for that type of fishing, regardless of whose name is on it. In 30+ years of flyfishing, I have NEVER lost a fish due to reel failure or inadequacy, and I do not fish $400 and up reels. My last heavy rod, a 9wt (labeled as an sported a Bass Pro Hobbs Creek, which worked just fine. Never had a problem with steelhead or Pacific salmon, and never felt a desire to spend 10 times as much just in case.

DG checks the desire-to-have-an-Abel meter, which is stuck at zero.

It really depends on your price point. No that's not a joke, different people can afford different things. I love Lamson Waterworks reels. Abel, Charleston, Tibor, Billy Pate and many other are not in my price range and I really don't know much about them. $800 to $3000 reels are not for everyone. If weight is an option and pricing matches your budget the Ross Evolution is extrememly light and will do the job. If your budget is a little tighter than that check out the Lamson Velocity Hybred for $175 here: http://www.sierratradingpost.com/sea...rase=&allWords=

For something under $100 that will still do a great job try a Pflueger Trion or for a few bucks more a President.

Almost forgot about the Galvan's and the Bauers. Enjoy your shopping and have fun with it, then tell us what you invested in.

There are reels at every price point. I have bought 10 reels in under a year and three of those might fit your application. One was a Ross Rhythm 3.5, a Ross Flywater 4 and a Pflueger Trion 1990. Buy what you like and what you can afford.

Here are some reviews that you might enjoy:

There are many reviews out there, again, enjoy the shopping experience then get on the water.

    Check this out: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=STRK:MEWA:BIN
    It is the Danielsson 8twelve.
I am going to pick up one of these myself.
I have two other smaller Danielsson reels and they have the smoothest drags with the least startup inertia that I have ever felt. Including my Abels.
    They are made in Sweden.
It is best to deal with this guy on eBay. He is out of Australia. That is why the shipping is so high. If you try to buy this real direct from Swedan it runs 3193 kroners or $508.88 US dollars.
See full details on the Danielsson site at : http://www.danielsson-flyreels.com/en/start.php
I am not affiliated with this company in any way. I just like their reels.

I could be wrong, but aren't those the same as the Loop reels?
