Thread: Sage VT2?

    Default Sage VT2?

I have two VPS's that I love, both in 5wts. They discontinued them before I could pick up a 4pc 7wt. How do these compare in action to the new VT2, which sort of replaced the VPS? Search for a used VPS or try the VT2? I'd have to drive quite awhile to testcast one.

As a fellow admirer of the RPL/VPS taper, and an employee in Sage shop, I find my observations of the VT2 taper to be fairly consistent with that of our customers. By general characterization they are fairly similar, but in hand with line on the water not always so much. The 3-5 wts have been well received and are very nice fishing tools. 6 and up have had mixed reviews, some folks finding them a bit clubby and dead feeling, and some folks liking them. From what I've seen on the spey boards, the two handers are very well liked overall, and probably what I'll make my jump into spey with. We put a few 9's on the boat for striper trips and found the butt section to be less than what we expected when getting it on with larger fish, and the rods felt overlined with 350 gr DC sink lines. I'm not sure how well this answers your question as I believe many folks are comparing them to lighter more modern tapers than the RPL/VPS... and our salt water trails we're probably less than fair when we're used to throwing Xi2's. In general, the folks that have test cast and bought them have been very happy... but quite a few test cast and asked to try other models, often opting for an FLi or Launch in comparison. Having RPL/VPS rods in 4-6 wt myself, I like the VT2 3&4's, and compare them favorably. YMMV

    TL's!
    ... But a lifelong journey.

I choose fly rods the same way I do women, motorcycles, and cowboy boots...
go with what ever feels good, and keep on hand as many as I can afford
