  1. Default Brown Bear Left for Dead Russian River, AK

Breaking news here in Alaska. A brown bear with three 200lb 2-year old cubs was shot and left for dead on the Russian River.

Anyone with information should report it to the Alaska Dept of Fish and Game, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, or the Alaska State Police.
    Thanks

Interesting and sad story, but there are a lot of questions left to be answered. Was it in self defense? Having learned to fly fish for trout on that river, it holds a special place in my heart. I have seen bears nearly every trip there, and was grateful to see such a powerful force of nature where they were meant to be. In all the runins I have had with bears there, I cannot recall one that even gave me a second glance. Hopefully this act was done in self defense, where the only real crime was that it was not reported to F&G. It will be a sad day if it was done for fun or spite.

    Jeff:
There's lots of stories floating around, but most of them say it wasn't self defense. I'll keep notices posted as new information becomes available, if that's okay with the webmaster.

Some new information surfaced today, but not enough to pinpoint a suspect.

Wow thats terrible. Interestingly enough i saw that bear from about 25 yards less than a week ago. Huge bear and let me say the people that were fishing in that particular area were not showing these bears enough respect in the first place.

Wow! 25 yards is just a *little* too close for my own comfort. I prefer about oh, say, 150.

Seems we are starting the blame game. The lastest article blames the fishery and the way its managed for the death of the bear. The point may be valid, but policy, any policy is easy to establish, and nearly impossible to change.
