The Borg.
What really drove back The Borg was re-runs of "Married with Children". They thought that Peg Bundy was real and they did not wish to... assimilate...

My favorite was the blob. As a child I didn't get to watch much TV. I saw the Blob up to the point where it took over the dinner but didn't get to see the ending until around 10 years later. My imagination made my "blob" continue to get even bigger until there wasn't any escaping it. Sometimes not having a perfect ending can be better than the packaged feel good endings.
