Does anyone know someone in the West Michigan area that might be willing to take on a rookie and teach them the ropes of bamboo rod building?

You bet. Ron Barch from Hastings. Just finished building my first rod with him. Ron is the publisher of the Planing Form newsletter and has taught literally hundreds of guys to build bamboo rods. Send me a PM if you want more info. He helped me get hooked up with all the gear I needed to build with and am going over this Saturday to buy a culm and get started on my second rod. Ron is a great guy and one of the best instructors in the country, bar none! Cannot recommend him enough.
