It all depends on your quarry and where you are going really.
If you are hunting crappies then make sure you add red to some flies. One I use all the time is real simple:
Wrap a size 6 hook with 4 or 5 wraps of lead.
Then cover the lead with thread color of choice.
Coat the tread with epoxy.
Your probably going to be tipping these with euro's or waxies for the sent so don't make the body to big.
Walleyes I have added rabbit fur to small jigs to add life with some success.
Some lakes in northerm Minnesota the water is dark and visibility is limited so adding rattles to your fly (jig) can be effective.
If you are chasing perch or walleye then remember you will probably be fishing in 15' - 30' of water so weight helps get down to the fish fast but to much reduces sensitivity.
