    Default help for new tyers

Check with your local fly shops. I started to learn at a local tackle store. The owner was very helpful and would show me how to tie new patterns. Started me out with woolybuggers and went from there. (You need to understand, they want you to buy stuff from them and it seemed like a fair trade for the lessons.) As Joe mentioned above, fly fishing clubs can be a great place to learn. Before going through chemo for cancer, I belonged to NCFF here in Cleveland and they had great meetings with tying instruction every month. Not to mention, all the great people willing to help. Once you learn the skills, then books can give you all the new patterns you'd ever want to tie or you could work on creating new patterns.

    Mudflaper:

I learned by myself at first. I had the money to buy lots of verry good and sometimes not so good books and vidios. FAOL has very good info for, the beginning tier. I try to tye all the Flies of The Week.

As Warren says though a beginners class and kits will ease the proccess. As Joe said
joining a Federation of Fly Fishers (FFF) fly fishing club is an excelent sugestion. They both will make the learning a lot easier.

I love catching a fish on a fly that I tied and a rod that I built.

    Good tying and fishing,

Default more video easy to follow and see how to do it

If you go here and down load this player

    http://www.omn.org/
you can watch alot of videos on flytying. link online media network i register d to make searches a bit easier . remember these are tv epasodes. and each file shows like three flys and is aprox a half hour long . so they are ralativly big files . but you can download them, then create a data cd. 2 shows will fit on standerd cd . I dont know about dvds. because i dont have a dvd burner.

To burn to cd find the folder that the files are stored in . and just add them to the cd burning list . i would probably just down load a few at a time and in series .

like perhaps the files that start with 401 and 402 403 and 404 or what ever. then when you record them rite on the disk what ones they are like ftaa 401 & 402 once on disk you can delete the files from the folder on your computer and make more room to download more files.

if your confused then just download what interests you and delete them from within the program . and forget about burning them . but remember they take up a bit of disk space .
so dont try to download alot of them or you may not have enough disk space to operate your system. enjoy .

Sounds like you are off to a good start with your lessons. I've been tying since 1970, and started with books (dozens of them). I never had a formal lesson, but as advised previously, that's the best way to start.

Without regurgitating the good advice previously mentioned, I suggest being consistent with the process. Tie, tie again and again and again. If it doesn't look right, cut the material off and try again. You should make time to tie flies several times a week if possible. Practice, practice practice. Fish will take an ugly fly, but we all strive for perfection.

Finally, ask questions. There are some real pros on this website and, as indicated, they are all more than willing to help. Hang in there!!

I took a fly tying class while in college, and it was a great help, but I am far certain I learned more on this website than anywhere else!
