Check with your local fly shops. I started to learn at a local tackle store. The owner was very helpful and would show me how to tie new patterns. Started me out with woolybuggers and went from there. (You need to understand, they want you to buy stuff from them and it seemed like a fair trade for the lessons.) As Joe mentioned above, fly fishing clubs can be a great place to learn. Before going through chemo for cancer, I belonged to NCFF here in Cleveland and they had great meetings with tying instruction every month. Not to mention, all the great people willing to help. Once you learn the skills, then books can give you all the new patterns you'd ever want to tie or you could work on creating new patterns.
