    Jim,

I did a little research and came up with zilch. I found one quote that stated the difference in a western fly was a little more hackle.

    Sorry!

By the way, what part of Maryland?

    J,
I looked in my book; West's Best Dry Flies and the Adams Recipe uses white calf tail for the wing, the rest of the fly is tied normally.

"The Western Adams" only differs from the original Adams, in the tail
Below, is the excerpt from Sean Andrew's "Western Trout Flies" files.

    Tail:
Grizzly and Brown hackle fibers mixed (or moose hair for the Western Adams)

Dougey.... that pattern, you quoted..do they list that as "THE" Adams, dry fly? OR "The Adams Trude"!?
I only, ask, because the traditional "Adams" dry fly is tied with upright, and divided, grizzly hackle tip wings.!??!

    Paul,
It say "Adams with a split calf tail wing" The only "Trude" I know about it the "Coachman".

    Default Western Adams

    Hi All,

I am with flybinder. The pattern that I have seen for the Western Adams is like the standard Adams, but with a moose hair tail to give better floatation.

    Regards,

    Gandolf

Doug, just from my own "speirience", and how "pointy" those tail fibers are..... I'm going with "moose main", for the tail on that Trude pattern!?!
Plus, even sort of out of focus, they still don't appear to be bushy enough for herl.

THIS, is the kind of thing, that I love about fly fishing and fly tying.............. there's so MUCH out there, that even the "old standards" don't stand a chance, any more!??!
(Below, excerpted WITH permission.... the "true" or, "original Adams")
Hook: Mustad 94840 or other dry hook.
Tail: Mixed brown and grizzly hackle fibers.
Body: Gray dubbing (this one is dark).
    Wings: Grizzly hackle tips.
Hackle: Mixed brown and grizzly hackle.

Note: Although actually created in the early 1920's by Leonard Halladay of Michigan, the Adams was named after Charles Adams, an angler from Ohio, who gave the fly a reputation.

Then........in the book, "Pacific Northwest Fly Patterns", (1963 Patrick's Fly Shop-Spokane Wash.)
    "Tip-Gold Tinsel
    Tail-Golden Pheasant tippet fibers (6-
    Body-Gray Wool
    Wings-Mallard Fibers-Upright and Divided
    Hackle-Barred & Brown, wrapped together"

    SAME, publication, but "Eastern Pattern":
    "Tail-Barred hackle fibers-mixed w/rust

    Body-Blue Dun/Gray dubbing
    Wings-Barred hackle tips-upright/divided
    Hackle-Barred and Brown-wound together".

And, earlier, I've already posted what I'd found describing the "Western Adams", (subbing moose in the tail, for hackle fibers). And, Sagefisher, found yet ANOTHER really good description of what someone ELSE feels is the "Western" version!??!
(Thanks, Sagefisher, for finding that by the way!)

So it sort of breaks down, to me anyway, "J" that you have to sort of look around and see what appeals to you the most and which YOU FEEL is the better pattern for your type of fishing!?!

And, for Doug's "Adams Trude", I found yet ANOTHER variation, bu this thread is about the "Western Adams!!
