sage bass rods

OK! sage has new bass rods that come with their own fly line measured in grains. 290 for the smallmouth rod and 330 for the largemouth rod.

when buying a reel for these rods, should i go to the cortland fly line website and use their charts to convert the grain size to "wt" to determine what size reel to buy???

Go to the Sage site and find the email area or call them. I emailed them about a product question and they got back to me in a day or so

I wouldn't base your reel choice on the grain ratings. The special line Sage provides with these rods is heavily weighted up front.

My understanding from people who have fished them is that they fish well with a standard 7 or 8 WF and 8 or 9 WF line respectively too.

Anyway, I plan on ordering one of each in the spring. I will be using the same reels that I use on my 7, 8 and 9 wt rods on both of them (Ross Gunnison 4, Teton Tioga, Ross BG-4, Loomis Synchrotech 8-9-10, etc). This is what the people I know are using. The reels I use on my 10 and 11wt rods are a little bit heavier than I like for all day casting (Abel 3, Abel Super 11, SA System 2 10/11, etc)
