the leader board i built calls for 11 strands on the 1st loop, 9 strands on the 2nd loop & 3 on the 3rd........with 4lb mono i found best for a 5wt rod is to make the leader with 9 strands on the 1st loop, 5 on the second & 3 on the 3rd....... no one sells 2lb mono around here & they all say it has been discontinued for a while now so i just use 4lb..... all my leaders turn out at 7.5ft & 9ft..... for my board i used 2 4ft 1 by 4 hinged in the middle so i can fold it up & put it on top my tying desk when i dont need to use it..... the peg holes are drilled using a taper bit & the peg ends are cut at the same taper...... dont have to use screws or glue ti hold them into the holes....... i just put the pegs in & givem a little downward twist & they hold tightly in place...... when i need to move the pegs or take them out for storage, i just pull up on the pegs giving them a little twist & they come rite out

I have not thought about reducing the taper at the firs two pegs. I'll have to try it. My board is also a 1x4 hinged but I hinged mine so it folded to the back so I could leave the pegs in.

What a thread huh? I first read about furling after I saw a fellow demonstrating the procedure at a Dallas Fly Fishers meeting many years ago. I read up on it, found an article by Henk Verhaar that got me going. I soon moved to a powered drill, both ways, having to learn to "hold my tongue just right" to avoid disaster.
I bought Micropatterns by Darrell Martin and have found it a valuable source of jumping off information.
I utilize hardwood for pegs because it can be sanded smooth to prevent material catching on burrs or splinters. Cup hooks at perviously measured points to hold paper clips which secure tag ends not being currently worked.
Shorb loop, what an innovation! I am lazy so love its practicality.
Six foot and four foot leaders. My zero and one weight rods like the shorter lengths, not so much energy required to turn them over and that's good for short, light and delicate.
I'll try to get some photos on here of my board. Bryan Nims kindly built it for me in his woodshop. It's a work of art.
now theres an idea.....
I've been pre-treating my thread leaders with floatant before twisting and furling. The above discribed method of furling DOES NOT work on them!! They are too sticky so I still hang them with the 3 oz. wt.
I'm bumping this up for RDL
Thanks Jack, I've actually been following this for a bit, this was the beginning of the end for me
Welcome to the Dark Side.
