Assuming even average smarts, they all wouldn't be doing it if it wasn't worth it to them for whatever reason.
It's just another one of those things to add in the statement; "Yeah, I caught that fish on a fly I tied attached to leader that I furled being cast by the rod I built with the guides I twisted and the reel seat and grip I glued up and turned on my lathe. Naw, ain't hard to do at all. Just eats up a little time is all."

As my brother says; "Ain't nothing but something to do."

Yes, I use it all the time. Makes great leaders.

I don't even have my leader jig made yet. The nets will have to wait until next winter. Too many other things going on this winter with the "boo thing" and now furling, plus I have three more graphite rods to build as soon as the business work load slows down. Plus, I haven't tied a fly since September 16th when I last taught a class. And don't even ask about fishing...steelhead in the river and Joe on the ladder.

I'll whip up a few leaders and lets go chase those steelhead. I feel a case of fishing fever setting in...

this question has been lurking around in my head for a while and I gotta get it out:

Me and Beaucephus are from the heart of Dixie and intend staying here, so I, at least, have never had reason to lay eyes on a spool of ice fishing thread. How?some?ever, I occasionally see Bass Pro and Cabela?s sales that include fluorocarbon, copolymer, and braid ice fishing lines down to 2lb?test, some to 1lb?test and ?0.25lb equivalent diameter?. Does making such a line suitable for sub?zero temps include giving them characteristics that also rule them out for furling purposes? Just off hand, it would seem like they?d be prime candidates

    Just pondering . . . hope I didn?t interrupt a productive train of thought somewhere . . .

    WOOO HAAA!!
I just furled my second leader with out hanging it with the weight!!
While fishing Saturday Warren told me of his experiance of hooking a snap swivel at the tippet end of the V and lifting the legs off the post.
Yeah, sure Warren! (time to get the rubber room ready!!)
This morning I worked up the courage to give it a try using the cheapest thread I've got. As he had told me nothing will happen untill you move the swivel forward a bit. He had mentioned how fast it furls but I almost dropped the swivel when the thing went Ziiiiip and was furled!!
I layed up and twisted another one using a combonation of clear nylon and flourocarbon. This time I fashioned a large paper clip into a handle for the snap swivel. Well, it was furlled in about 2 seconds!!
I've been measuring my leaders to see the differance in various materials and usually come up 7'2" or 7'3". This one came up 7'1"! Is the furl tighter or is the weight inducing some streatch?

    Jack,

The boys from Mansfield don't hang their leaders either. They remove them from the fixture after twisting, and just "shake them out..." literally!
