Well it all depends on what your gonna want it to do or what your using it for. There are those that would attach a piece of mono and and a streamer and swing/strip it and there are others that would attach a piece of fluorocarbon and a nymph and drift that for better/or more specific suggestions more info is really needed.

An intermediate fly line is one that has a neutral buoyancy, so it does not float, but sinks very slowly. As opposed to sinking lines which are denser than water and sink at various rates, depending on the density of that particular sinking line.

Oh. I thought it had something to do with the cost, i.e. inexpensive, 'intermediate' and expensive. I've often heard of 'Intermediate Sinking' lines, not just 'Intermediate'.

An intermediate/sinking line is one that has a sink tip (often in the range of 12 to 25 ft) and and intermediate running line. There are also floating/sinking lines where the running line is floating.

In the last few years, I find I don't use the intermediate lines as much as I once did, preferring a floater, a floater with a lead head, or a heavier full sink such as a type 3 (intermediates are type 1) to do the same job.
My fishing partner on the other hand uses an intermediate 80% of the time

Well I've got to question that,tlerm....maybe I'll learn something...
I've always thought the Intermediate line [designated "I" on the box..for those of you from Rio Linda] is actually a sinking line and has the slowest sink rate of all.
F = Floating
Sinking:
I = Intermediate
II
III
IV
V
VI
etc
