On saturday morning I was feeling fine, but I had to go to the health clinic for my winter 'flu jab.
They gave me two, one for 'flu and one for pneumonia. Since then I have been feeling really grotty.
Aching joints, no appetite and a mild headache. On top of that I had sent off for more blue arctic fox
for the Camasunary, when I looked they were a very dark navy blue. I'll find another use it.
Also my landline has been very bad and I could not get through to anybody.
You may be supposing that I am not in a good mood. Never mind I shall soldier on.

I have chosen to tie one of Fran Betters' creations called "The Usual". Eric Austin, a fellow North Country boy, describes it better than I can [url=http://www.flyanglersonline.com/features/oldflies/part439.html:b60ee]here.[/url:b60ee] I like this fly because it illustrates beautifully how some excellent innovations happen by accident. As Fran decribes in his book, it was one of those days at the bench when he got a bit bored, and his eye happened to fall on a snowshoe rabbit foot that had been sitting on his bench since it had been thrown there after a successful hunting trip. He tied up a bunch of his Haystack patterns using the Snowshoe, and promptly forgot about them. A local fisherman by the name of Bill Phillips grabbed a few from the box they sat in one day, and gave the snowshoe haystacks a try. Needless to say, the story ends with a successful fly. Mr. Phillips, according to the story is also responsible for the fly's name. When people would ask what fly he was having such success with, he would reply, "Oh the usual". Mr. Betters liked the way that sounded, and there you go.

My recipe is very much the same as the one in Eric's Old Flies piece
