The page JC pointed you to is a pretty darn good article, and Panman's recommendation is a good one to, but neither emphasize that in October, the presence of spawning salmon in the system is critical. Traditional rigs for that time would be an egg pattern as the point fly and then some sort of nymph dropper. The dropper could be anything from a #14-16 Copper John (red is a good color), #16-18 beadhead flashback phesant tail, caddis patterns such as Fox's Poopah or Mercer's Z-wing, or a generic attractor like a Prince. Depending on where you drift, there may be steelhead around, which is always an added bonus.
Good luck.
My favorite setup is a pettis unreal egg or M.C. Redd Reaper and then for a dropper olive, or brown bodied black-bead fox's poopah size 16-18, Hogans S&M size 18, GB hares ear size 16. Sometimes wooly buggers can bring up some good fish too!
Eggs in champangne or orange, micro mayflys, fox pupa tan.
