I only use the reel if the fish takes all the slacked line out( "takes me to the reel")......which is rare.

Good fishing technique trumps all.....wish I had it.

I'm still somewhat new to fly fishing, and I am still waiting for this to happen.Originally Posted by MikieFinn

I want to thank everyone for their advice. I've been looking at the Flyfishing 101 (I thought I had at least an Associates Degree), and found a very clear explanation of what I have called "Finger-Reeling"

I going out for Bass Thursday evening. I'll try to use what I've learned.
Dudley provided a very good explanation. I think I will print it. Anywhooo....what might not be clear to you as yet....because you might not have seen it in action....is the stripping in of line with a fish on. When one says strip in by hand.....they mean you reach up your rod as far as you can below the first guide, grip the line and pull it in as far as you can, trap it under your finger against the rod with the other hand....and reach again.....etc.
Just FYI
Thanks for the help!!
No pics, but I caught a 14" SMB tonight, and had two others on that I lost. One threw the hook about 3 feet from shore, and the other snapped my leader! I was stripping the line, instead of finger-reeling, and I have to admit that it's a LOT better way to Bass fish.
Have a great weekend!
